  1. Playing a Total of Hard 12 Stand if the dealer is showing a 4, 5 or 6. Otherwise take a hit.
  2. This is where basic strategy comes in. If the dealer has a 2–6 showing you stop at 12–16, with one exception, hit 12 when dealer has a 2 showing. If dealer has a 7-A showing you hit until you reach 17–20.
  3. The likelihood of the dealer busting with them is respectively, 35.30% and 37.56% so you stand better chances of winning if you hit instead of standing on your hard 12. Hitting the hard 12 against a 2 or a 3 is recommended because there are only 4 out of 13 possible card denominations that can lead to a bust – the 10 and the three court cards.

How to Play a Hard Twelve Total in Blackjack - Hard 12

Hard hands:Hard 8 or less - Hard 9 - Hard 10 - Hard 11 - Hard 12 - Hard 13 - 16 - Hard 17 to 21
Soft hands:Soft 13 - 14 - Soft 15 - 16 - Soft 17 - Soft 18 - Soft 19 to 21
Splitting pairs:Aces - 2's - 3's - 4's - 5's - 6's - 7's - 8's - 9's - 10's

Hitting a 12 against a dealer's 4 is not important for this discussion. What is important is the irrelevance of 'taking the dealer's bust card', because in the same situation on the next hand you might take the card which would have given the dealer a 21 (prompting the stupid statement by some that 'I saved the table').

Reasoning

If the dealer has a 4, 5, or 6, then there is a great chance that the dealer has a stiff hand and will bust. You don't want to risk busting your 12 if there is a good chance of a dealer bust, because then you'll lose instead of winning.

Hitting On 12 In Blackjack

Any other upcard that the dealer has gives her a much smaller chance of busting, and since you have a 12, there are a lot of cards that can improve your hand, so it's worth taking the hit if the dealer doesn't have the 4, 5 or 6 showing.
